During the visit of some VUB researchers to the rehabilitation hospital of Hof Ter Schelde the idea arose to make a more sophisticated version of the rehabilitation device shown in the picture. Training with this device enables the patient to train muscles in the hand as he slides the bars to each other, making a fist. By adding or removing elastic strings the resistant force to the movement can be increased or reduced. The force can vary from practically zero Newton to 10-20N.

There were two principle improvements requested: the adjustment of power should happen automatically and the device should be equipped with a counter to keep track of the number of strokes. In effort to make training more fun they asked invent a game.
The assignment was given to two groups of engineering students in the context of the course Mechatronics. The result and development of one of these two projects is presented on this website.
