Pablo López García was born in Asturias (SPAIN) in 1972 and graduated in 1998 in Industrial Engineering with the Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieréa Industrial of Gijón.
Before joining the Robotics & Multibody Mechanics group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in 2017, he built a 20-year career in the European automotive industry, where he held various executive and operational roles with a strong focus on actuation technologies.
In 2022, he obtained his PhD in Applied Sciences from VUB with a dissertation on planetary gearboxes for electrical actuators in robotics. This research was supported by an Innovation Research Grant from VUB and a Proof-of-Concept Grant from Innoviris, the Brussels innovation agency.
Since 2023, Pablo has been Professor of Machine Elements at the VUB Department of Mechanical Engineering (MECH). He is also the founder and CEO of AILOS, a robotics start-up developing advanced gearbox technologies for next-generation robotic systems.
In addition, since 2021 he has served as an active member of the Automation & Robotics Committee of the American Gear Manufacturers Association (AGMA).
Research
The focus of my research are mechanical transmissions that can be combined with electrical motors to build highly efficient actuators with large torque density for use in human-centric robotic applications - exoskeletons, cobots, prosthesis, humanoids, ... - and beyond.
