Tom Verstraten was born in Ukkel, Belgium in 1989. He received the degree in Mechanical Engineering at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in June 2012. After working for Aquasystems International for one year, Tom returned to the VUB in October 2013 to pursue a PhD at the Robotics & Multibody Mechanics Research Group. His research is funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).


Tomís research focuses on the study of energy losses in actuators and the development of energy efficient actuation concepts. His research interests include compliant actuators and continuously/infinitely variable transmissions (IVT/CVT).
